How to Change Your Showerhead in 3 Easy Steps

STEP 1

DO THE PREP WORK

Before you begin, make sure to gather the necessary tools and materials:

Adjustable wrench or pliers
Teflon tape
New showerhead and accompanying accessories (if applicable)

Once you have the above, you’ll need to turn off the water supply. This valve will be located in your bathroom and will need to be shut off to avoid any potential water leakage.

STEP 2

REMOVE THE EXISTING SHOWERHEAD

Now that you have everything you need, it’s time to bid farewell to your existing showerhead. Using an adjustable wrench or pliers you’ll unscrew the showerhead. Carefully grip the nut connecting the showerhead to the shower arm, turn it counterclockwise until the showerhead is loosened enough to remove by hand, and place the existing showerhead away from your working space. TIP: Be careful not to damage the shower arm while loosening.

STEP 3

INSTALL THE NEW SHOWERHEAD

With the old showerhead removed, it’s time to install your brand new one! In order to prevent leaks, you’ll want to begin this next step by wrapping teflon tape around the threaded end of the shower arm in a clockwise direction. TIP: Ensure that the tape fully covers the threads without overlapping to create a tight, reliable seal. Once that is secure, you’ll screw the new showerhead onto the shower arm by hand until it’s hand-tight. Using the adjustable wrench or pliers, you’ll give it a final snug turn. Be sure not to overtighten as this could damage the shower system.
